USBTA’s innovative approach allows technicians to test and evaluate these technologies under challenging realistic conditions. It also allows engineers and manufacturers the ability to observe and ask questions about how USBTA envisions using their products.

Keynote Speaker: Vandiver K. Hood, Chief Operating Officer
Vandiver “Van” Hood, Chief Master Sergeant (retired) United States Air Force, hails from Greensboro, NC. Van served as an Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Technician for over 30 years retiring as the Air Force EOD Career Field Manager. During his time in the Air Force, he served multiple combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan earning the Legion of Merit and three Bronze Stars. As the USBTA Chief Operating Officer Van overseas all operational activities and the strategic plans to support USBTA activities including congressional support activities, training, education, community outreach, technology exchange, member relations, facility operations, and industry support.
Chief Hood retired from the Air Force as the EOD Career Field Manager, Headquarters United States Air Force, Directorate of the Air Force Civil Engineers, Pentagon, Washington D.C. In that role, he coordinated with Headquarters Air Force representatives and Major Command (MAJCOM) Functional Managers on matters affecting the EOD specialty and synchronized the career field priorities and strategic objectives with Air Force policies while being responsive to current and future needs of the Department of Defense. Chief Hood also established Air Force and career field policies and program requirements; coordinated senior enlisted assignment priority plans; oversaw the entire AF EOD training portfolio; and addressed key strategic and operational issues for more than 1,900 total force Airmen.
Chief Hood entered the Air Force in April 1994, volunteering for EOD training. Over his career he held a variety of diverse assignments in all areas of flight duties and management within the EOD community both overseas and within the continental United States. His lengthy deployment history includes support of Operations SOUTHERN W ATCH,NORTHERN W ATCH, ATLAS RESPONSE, IRAQI FREEDOM, ENDURING FREEDOM, NEW DAWN, andCombined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa. He is a combat veteran who has rendered safe, exploited, and/or disposed of over 1,000 enemy improvised explosive devices. His major awards and decorations include, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with two oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, AF Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, AF Achievement Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal, and the AF Combat Action Medal.
